Student of the Month  (SOTM)

This program honors a student each month of the school calendar from East Lyme High School (which includes students from both Salem and East Lyme).  The students are selected by eleven departments at the school:  Math, English, Social Studies, Science, Global Language, Music, Art, Health/Physical Education, Technology Education, Coastal Connections and Family/Consumer Science.

The monthly program is conducted on the first Wednesday of each month.  The student's teacher provides an introduction describing the student's academic and extra-curricular activities.  Students are invited to address the Club regarding their experiences in school and their plans for the future.  Each student is honored with a plaque commemorating their award.  The first presentation in October includes both the September and October students.  The last presentation in May includes the May and June students.

The entire season culminates in a Student of the Month Celebration, to which the parents are invited and scholarships are presented.  The programs is led by the Project Chair who explains the ideals of Rotary, some history of Rotary and the Club, and remarks about the Club's community involvement.  Invited guests, the Superintendent of Schools, the high school Principal and the East Lyme First Selectman are invited to offer their remarks.  The students and their parents are introduced and scholarships in the amount of $500.00 are presented to each student.
